Focal panels are elements of a big energy-focusing device that C.W. has been preparing to assemble by the Tree. They are a large scale versions of the small parabolic elements used in seed-swap devices for focusing the power needed to trigger them. And just like in the seed devices, a battery is used to amplify the ambient membrane power. C.W. plans to use the battery of Hunrath to amplify the energy that the focal panels will emit towards the Tree, and then disable the Bleeder which dissipates the excess ambient power. Caroline Farley has tried to dissuade C.W. from using the battery in this project, but instead to simply let the natural amount of ambient power act on the Tree.
Gameplay[]
The player does not interact directly with these panels during the game, but at a certain stage we observe that C.W. has assembled them, creating the big focusing device by the Tree.
Description[]
Each of eight focal panels consists of six triangular metal surfaces with a central part around which they are mounted and a big tubular base with three disc-like rings. At the beginning of the game, the eight sets of parts are loaded on eight rail trolleys found at C.W.'s workshop, one of which is blocking a door that will be important later on in the game.
Luckily while the player is away on an important mission, C.W. moves the eight trailers along the train bridge and the door is free to open. Most importantly though, C.W. has also completed the whole assembly of the panels, fixed on an inwardly curved tower so that the panels are focused on the upper part of the Tree.
Miniature focal panels[]
A miniature version of the focal panels is used in seed-swap devices to trigger seed-swap behavior, an action referred to as parabolic focusing.[1]
