Obduction Wiki

Villein technology includes all devices, mechanisms and methods of extruding objects and structures of the Villein, a technologically advanced species. Since in Obduction the Villein have friendly and cooperative relations with the Humans, a lot of the devices we find in Hunrath are a combination of Villein and human engeneering. C.W. has enough grasp of the Villein technology to be able to combine some of their devices with his own inventions, although he does express his ignorance as to how they do what they do. The Villein also understand Mofang technology enough to develop tools to disable it.

Villein technology in Hunrath[]

Mofang disabler gifted to the humans

Two Mofang disablers have been gifted to the humans to disable any device made of Mofang technology. One has been mounted on the railcart along with a stretch screen monitor and one is found in C.W.'s workshop for testing purposes. Both the Battery and the Bleeder include parts of Villein technology which are obvious externally. Specifically in the document Bleeder description, C.W. writes: The power is collected through Villein engineered extruded cables that attached directly to the dome membrane. Also a Villein control panel, devices made for non-Villein species to facilitate communication and control of some of their devices, has been given to humans to train with. This device is found in the Gas station used in conjunction with a modified cash register to translate base-4 Villein numerals to decimal Arabic ones.

Villein technology in Maray[]

The entryway stretch screen

As soon as one enters Maray, it becomes obvious that the Villein have a very developed sense of aesthetics. Not only do their devices and buildings have a keen aesthetic design but they also blend in with their natural environment in an excellent way. Then there is the element of using the ambient energy without damaging the ecosystem. Although their main buildings have strong metal footings that hold them above the ground, their spherical domes, the bridge, and even the cable car tracks, are suspended or supported in mid-air by the use of devices that seem to interfere strongly with the ambient energy.

Inspecting the Gauntlet maze, we see that it is mostly suspernded in mid-air. From four directions there are devices from which the distinctive Villein tubes plug directly into the environment, be it rock, water (below) and even the membrane wall at one point. Tubes also plug into the river below. It could be said that the structure uses the ambient power to stay suspended in mid-air. This would sound as a far-fetched conjecture if it wasn't for the above mentioned quote from the Bleeder description document.

Among the Villein tech devices we find in Maray are stretch screens, control panels that are used to materialize or disable the stepping sections of their bridges, their weapons and shoulder pieces seen in the Villein armory and also when we meet the dead Villain and the wounded Trar, Mofang disablers (one that has been set up to disable the red beam and another to disable the Mofang WMD), their elevators, the cable car (actually, a cable-pod) and the whole cryostatic storage mechanism of the Silo.
